Casreli

The vineyards of Casreli on the right bank of the Alazani Valley overlooking the Caucasus mountains

When five medical professionals unite to produce wines in the traditional Kvevri style, the result is Casreli: Natural wines crafted with precision.

It all started in December 2014, when a friend of the Quintet offered them a small piece of land on the right bank of the Alazani Valley in the village Vachnadziani, on the crossroad of 4 PDOs (Mukuzani, Vazisubani, Gurjaani and Kakheti).

This was their chance to realize their long-standing dream of producing natural and organic wines for self-consumption and for their immediate entourage. And the pleasure wouldn’t be complete without seeking old and forgotten Georgian varieties. And thus, the first vineyards - including the extremely rare Chitistvala variety - were planted in the spring of 2015 and harvested in 2016.

For the sake of fun, they decided in 2017 to participate in the Kvevri Wine International Competition. With the Chitistvala winning Gold, the excitement was such that it was about time to hit the international market. All the vineyards are managed organically in addition to biodiversity-stimulating practices.

Hygiene is another hallmark of Casreli. The five owners coming all from a medical background, they’re familiar with wine chemistry, microbiology, grape physiology and other aspects of enology and viticulture. The Kvevri are kept spotlessly clean year after year to prevent any off odours and flavours that are sometimes encountered in such wines.

“It shows in their thrilling, precise and typical Kakhetian amber wines”, says Simon Woolf.
