Where the Mountains Meet the Sea
MAWJ was born from friendship and a shared desire to reveal a different face of Lebanese wine.
The project was founded by three friends: Maher Harb, founder and winemaker of SEPT Winery, Julien Fouret, and Abdo Nasser.
Maher’s journey into wine began with a return to the land. After leaving a consulting career in Paris, he returned to his family’s ancestral village and began restoring land that had remained uncultivated since the Lebanese Civil War. Surrounded by oak trees and wild Mediterranean herbs, he taught himself to make wine and established SEPT, a small winery dedicated to expressing the character of its terroir.
While SEPT is rooted in the mountains overlooking Batroun, MAWJ explores an entirely different landscape: the coastal vineyards of Eddé, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
For Maher, MAWJ represents a dialogue between two worlds that have long shaped Lebanon: the mountains and the sea.
The vineyards are located in Eddé, near the historic coastal town of Batroun. Their limestone and clay soils have been farmed organically for more than twenty years. Abundant sunshine allows the grapes to ripen fully, while the influence of the sea helps preserve freshness and balance in the fruit.
“MAWJ” means “wave” in Arabic. The name evokes not only the sea visible from the vineyards, but also the movement of people, cultures, and ideas along the Lebanese coast. For thousands of years, this coastline has connected Lebanon with the wider Mediterranean, carrying wine, goods, knowledge, and traditions across the sea.
MAWJ draws inspiration from this history without attempting to recreate the past. Its wines offer a contemporary expression of Lebanon: vibrant, generous, approachable, and unmistakably Mediterranean.
