Slovenia
The Vipava Valley has been a recognised wine landscape for centuries. In 1844, local priest Matija Vertovec published the first technical work on winegrowing in Slovene, followed later in the century by the valley’s first wine school. Its enduring importance lies in varieties found almost nowhere else, particularly Pinela and Zelen, preserved among marl slopes swept by the Bora wind. They sit alongside Rebula in white, sparkling and skin-contact wines.
