Lebanon
Wine has been made in present-day Lebanon for some 5,000 years, long before Phoenician merchants carried it across the Mediterranean. Its modern industry took shape in the high Beqaa Valley, where altitude and dry summers established an important centre of commercial winemaking around Zahlé and Chtaura. Today, this inland tradition meets a younger coastal movement around Batroun, while Akkar preserves the cultivation of the ancient Souri olive. Cinsault and Carignan sit alongside indigenous white grapes such as Merweh and Obeideh, in a collection spanning wine, arak, gin, whisky, beer and olive oil.
