Familie Bauer

Josef and Eva Maria Bauer farm land where their family has been documented growing vines since 1794. Josef took over in 2001 and converted the estate to organics, certified in 2011, at Grossriedenthal — among the highest vineyards in Wagram, on loess still yielding marine fossils and snail shells. He is also one of the growers who brought Roter Veltliner back from near-extinction: unrelated to Grüner Veltliner despite the name, and down to some 200 hectares by 2010, it was recognised by Slow Food’s Ark of Taste in 2011.
